Top 5 Signs You Have Possums in Your Roof
Possums are nocturnal creatures that love the safety and warmth of Australian roof cavities. Identifying them early can prevent significant damage to your insulation and electrical wiring.
1. Nocturnal Noises
The most common sign is the sound of heavy thumping, scurrying, or scratching overhead specifically at dusk (when they leave) and dawn (when they return). Unlike rats, possums are heavier and their movements sound much louder.
2. Vocalisations
Bruish-tailed possums are surprisingly vocal. If you hear hissing, growling, or screeching coming from your roof, it's a strong indicator of possum activity, especially if multiple possums are fighting over territory.
3. Stains and Odours
Possum urine has a strong, distinctive ammonia-like smell. Over time, this can seep through your ceiling, creating yellowish-brown stains that are difficult to remove and can lead to mould issues.
