Possums vs. Rats: How to Tell the Difference

Misidentifying the visitor in your roof can lead to ineffective treatment plans. While both are active at night, the strategies—and laws—for handling them are very different.

Size and Sound

Rats are light and agile; you’ll hear rapid pitter-patter or light gnawing. Possums are much heavier (up to 4kg) and sound like a person walking on your ceiling. If it sounds "heavy," it's likely a possum.

Droppings Identification

Possum droppings are typically 15-20mm long, cylindrical, and olive-shaped, often found in clusters. Rat droppings are much smaller (about 12mm), thin, and have pointed ends.

Entry Points

Rats can squeeze through a gap the size of a thumb. Possums require a larger opening, usually around the size of a tennis ball or a fist, often created by pulling back roof tiles or breaking through fascia boards.
